HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 1 (acn) A strong local storm on Tuesday evening hit the western portion of eastern Camaguey city killing one person and inflicting damage on homes, electric and telephone infrastructure.
Jorge Pereira, 46, died after an electric wire fell on his home backyard, Civil Defense authorities informed. In statements to acn Lieutenant Colonel Felix Villegas said that the storm hit the area with 80-kilometer-per hour winds, but even stronger in areas where trees, telephone and electric poles were downed.
Major damage was reported in the Ignacio Agramonte district and in large urban areas, according to Radio Camaguey webpage. Rapid actions by the Civil Defense system at all levels favored the reactivation of electric circuits and the recovery of affected areas.
This included combined task forces from search and rescue teams, electric company workers and community services, who worked overnight in the zones. The Civil Defense authorities are currently assessing the damage to attend to the needs of the families and entities affected by the storm.
