Cuba extends tobacco harvest till JulyHAVANA, Cuba, Jun 24 (acn) TABACUBA Business Group executives said they will extend the current tobacco campaign until July to offset losses caused by climatic damages.

At a press conference at the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG by its Spanish acronym), Miguel Vladimir Rodriguez Gonzalez, first vice president of the company, said that the goal is to plant more to ensure the restoration of the harvest, which reaches up to May more than 30 000 hectares planted.

Given the climatic disadvantages, TABACUBA and its business system adopted appropriate measures regarding risk prevention against drought, heavy rains and high temperatures that cause the appearance of pests and diseases.

It was also crucial the training of managers, technicians and producers, the introduction of new seed varieties, timely securing and the support provided by MINAG´s Department of Soil and Plant Health, the National Insurance Company and the banking system in the country.

The executive said that 24 000 tons of layers were achieved in the 2015-2016 campaign, a result that allows for this year to maintain the balance of the tobacco industry through the supply of raw materials for export and domestic consumption.

Fidel Sanchez Triana, TABACUBA vice president of production, noted they are working on the schedule for next season from April 1st; and they already selected seedbeds areas in which the program of defense against pests and building natural cure places destined to produce layers for export is continued.

Our major challenges are the modernization projects of factories, expansion of productive capacities of cigarettes nationwide and standardize all exportable quality productions, said Rodis Manuel Ortiz, TABACUABA industry director.

The 2016-2017 stage intends exceeding the previous year with 28 010 hectares and a production of 29 911 tonnes is planned.
