Doctor June Soomer: New Secretary of the ACS

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 3 (acn) Doctor June Soomer, of St. Lucia, was confirmed on Friday as the new general secretary of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), during the meeting of Foreign Ministers of the 7th summit of the organization, held in this capital.

The proposal of Soomer to exercise the next period of office of the organization was previously discussed at a meeting of Top Officials, and transferred on Friday to the conclave of Foreign Ministers.
Alfonso Munera, until now secretary general of the ACS, confirmed the recent decision to the Cuban News Agency, and expressed his joy at the election of Soomer, first woman to hold the position in the history of the organization.
We are all very happy, especially me because I think Doctor Soomer is a person with great experience and a very long career as Ambassador to the Caribbean Community and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States, and I believe will carry out an extraordinary work, said Munera.
The Colombian diplomat said he was grateful to the government of Cuba and in general to all countries of the AEC for their support for the work of the organization and his management as Secretary General for the past four years.
Munera also confirmed the approval by the foreign ministers of the new members -San Martin as Associate Member in its own right, and Bolivia, Uruguay, Kazakhstan and the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-Trade Treaty of the Peoples, as Observers.
