HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 15 (acn) Cuban professionals announced in this city the completion of a research project on the long-term impact of extreme climate changes and their consequences for the country.
The studies were aimed at identifying vulnerable areas for the periods 2011-2040, 2041-2070, and 2071-2099, specialists of the Institute of Tropical Geography, coordinator of the scientific initiative, told ACN.
They added that in their work they used satellite and aerial imagery as well as geographic information systems and they even processed more than 100 papers on soil cover.
In their preliminary findings, only desertification could represent 57.37 percent of the total area of the archipelago, particularly in areas of the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Camaguey, Las Tunas and Guantanamo.
In addition, they established biophysical and socioeconomic indicators on this phenomenon and also in land degradation in the nation and its possible causes.
The latter is considered the main problem of the nation in this area, and the priority is to try to halt and reverse this process, in order to obtain sustainability in food production.
Despite difficulties inherited by irrationality in the use of land, a negative fact is the economic, financial and commercial blockade of the United States, especially in terms of technologies, although there are national programs to counteract its effects.
The scholars concluded several climate models around scenarios that can prevail in Cuban territory until the end of 21st century and able to calculate what will happen to desertification in the current century if fulfilled the predicted.
The researchers developed a group of thematic maps about the present and future state of desertification process.
The Institute of Tropical Geography, one of the institutions of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, concluded last year 10 research projects, including one on East Havana watersheds and coastal area.
