HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 7 (acn) The potato harvest has begun in the areas of Guines and Batabano in the province of Mayabeque according to directives of the Agricultural and Forest Group.
Although the rain interfered with the planting of the crop at the end of 2015 the correct adjustment of the plan together with an emphasis in the selection of the areas to cultivate will allow a successful harvest.
The difference between this season and the last lies in the composition of the seeds used. National seeds were used in 2015 but farmers are using imported ones this year.
As in previous years, the potato will be taken to markets in the Cuban capital and also Mayabeque scheduled to be sold next month.
Over 35 tons of potato is expected to be selected this week in other entities where organizational measures have been guaranteed to avoid delays in its distribution.
According to specialists the crop is among the first in the world among the family of non-cereal product and forth important in the world food family after rice, wheat and corn consumed in over 130 nations.
