HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 8 (acn) Members of the cooperative and private farmer sectors are working hard in preparing the soil for the planting of over one thousand 300 hectares of potato which were not planted due to terrible climate conditions.
Enel Espinosa, director of the Cultivation Center of the Ministry of Agriculture pointed out that they have high quality imported genetic seeds and the necessary supplies to carry out the task.
Up until today the plan has been half way carried out with over 4 thousand hectares planted in Artemsa, Mayabeque, Matanzas, Villa Clara, Ciego de Avila and Cienfuegos only provinces in the country that gathers the ideal soil conditions for the cultivation.
He explained that the rain during the months of November, December and early January delayed the planned schedule of the specialists of the center.
He recalled that these conditions, together with the hot weather go against the objective of the workers in order to obtain 120 thousand tons of potato for the second consecutive year.
Strict compliance established by the technical regulations, the desire of the agricultural workers in producing and investing millions of dollars a year by the State make it possible for a large sector of the Cuban population to have access to the potato starting next month.
It is also important to improve and efficiently use the technology that includes consultation for the producers in important issues like combating plagues and diseases.
Cuba is the only tropical country in the world that cultivates potato and obtains an average of 22 tons per hectare, half of what is obtained by the most favored nations due for its cold climate and height conditions.
