HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 6 (acn) The average annual temperature in Cuba last year was the highest since 1951, reaching a value of 1.06 Celsius degrees above the historical average (25.49), said specialists from the Climate Center of the Meteorology Institute.
Granma newspaper reports that the development of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, in combination with the process of global warming, seems to have helped the Cubans to experience a very hot year, behavior that confirms the increasing trend of mentioned figure, observed in the country in the past six decades.
There were warm anomalies in practically every month of the calendar, particularly in March, April, November and December, although numerous records of maximum temperature occurred in various weather stations, while records above 37 Celsius degrees had an unusual frequency in different localities.
Also, the figure of 38.7, reported on Sunday, April 26, in the town of Velazco, Holguin, was just one tenth lower the absolute national heat record, set in Jucarito, province of Granma, on April 17, 1999.
During 2015, 45 percent of all the geographical area of Cuba presented deficit in rainfalls, being March, June, July and September the most affected months.
