HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 5 (acn) Costa Rica´s President Luis Guillermo Solis will pay a visit to Cuba December 15 and 16 to further bilateral relations with Havana, the Costa Rican presidency announced.
The visit also aims at exploring opportunities for Costa Rica in the Caribbean area in the social and economic fields, the announcement adds.
Cuba is a main country in the Caribbean and Costa Rica wishes to expand its policies to Central America and the Caribbean. This is an opportunity for us to look at a zone where we can find comparative advantages, said president Solis in the communiqué.
During a press conference in the capital San Jose the president said his trip to Cuba will follow a visit to Honduras and then the Summit of Heads of State of the Central American Integration System (SICA) to take place in El Salvador.
Solis said that he expects important advancement in a solution to the Cuban migrants in his country, so he discarded that this could be the main topic of his visit to Havana.
Some 4500 Cuban nationals are stranded in Costa Rica in an effort to reach US territory, going all the way north to Mexico to get to the US border. According to media reports Solis is optimistic about a solution of the Cuban migrants' situation if Guatemala allows their passage through its territory in route to the U.S.
In the first place, we want to keep advancing the normalization of relations between Costa Rica and Cuba, which were cut during the Cold War period, said the president.
Additionally, Solis said that his agenda in Cuba includes the consideration of commercial and investment opportunities on the island that is why he will be joined by a business mission, along with a delegation of academics headed by health minister Fernando Llorca.
