Texas Governor visits Cuban Special Development Zone

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 3 (acn) Texas governor, Republican Greg Abbott, toured the Special Development Zone at the western Cuban harbor of Mariel, plus its industrial free zone project, all at 45 kilometers from Havana.

Abbot paid a three day visit to Cuba this week heading a trade mission from Texas to consider business opportunities in Cuba as part of the new stage of relations between Washington and Havana.

The governor said that the future possibility for the Mariel Zone and harbor to be a container center serving for trade with the United State is able to compete with the harbor of Miami given its high technology, while it is near the new expansion of the Panama Canal.

The visitors´ agenda also included meetings with authorities from the Cuban Foreign Trade and Investment Ministry and Alimport Food Import Company and the Chamber of Commerce.

Abbot has been the third US governor to have visited the island following Andrew Cuomo, from New York and Asa Hutchinson, from Arkansas, since the Cuban and the US governments announced the reestablishment of diplomatic relations on December 17, 2014.
