Cuban Deputies at Inter-Parliamentary Union AssemblyHAVANA, Cuba, Oct 19 (acn) A Cuban delegation of lawmakers headed by Yolanda Ferrer, president of the International Relations Committee of the National Assembly of the People's Power (Parliament), attends the 133rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which began its general debate on Sunday at the International Conference Center of Geneva, Switzerland.

After inaugurating parliamentary works, Saber Chowdhury, chairman of the IPU, reviewed the work done since the previous Assembly held in Hanoi (March / April this year) to date, and informed about the agreement by acclamation to reinstate Fiji as member 167 of the IPU.
Simultaneously, the standing committees of Democracy and Human Rights and of Peace and International Security began their work to discuss issues related to democracy in the digital age, and the need to strengthen global cooperation to combat terrorism, respectively.
In the latter, Deputy Lazaro Barredo, speaking on behalf of Cuba, condemned terrorism in all its forms, including state terrorism.
The Forum of Young Parliamentarians of the IPU met in a workshop with the main objective of holding exchanges about the causes of migration and the socio-economic impact caused by the displacement of persons.
After intense discussions, the proposal of United Arab Emirates and Sudan, related to the strengthening of the role played by parliamentarians in the effective implementation of the principles of international law in the protection of refugees was adopted as an urgent point of the meeting.
"Fairer, more sensible and humane migration: an economic and moral imperative" is the theme presiding over the 133rd IPU Assembly.
