US Economic Blockade Affects Cuban Basketball

Cuba has difficulty in purchasing sports equipment like basketballs and specialized sneakers due to the US economic blockade against the Caribbean island.

Dalia Henry, basketball methodologist told AIN News Agency that the prices of the equipment continues to increase because Cuba purchases the objects in distant countries which would be different if the island could buy them from the United States.

She explained that thanks to an agreement with China, the Caribbean island has been able to buy basketballs for the development of the discipline in the provinces paying them at higher prices due to the economic blockade.

The specialist also said that it is difficult to access specialized sneakers and important materials in the discipline like the leather used to hold the hoop.

Dalia referred to the deterioration of the floor of the basketball court on the island whose effects would be less if the island could purchase expensive wood that also needs special resources for its reparation.

She also pointed out the lack of whistles and stop watches for referees lacking at the base where young figures are being trained and for the Sports Schools (EIDE).

Among the main effects of Washington´s economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed over 50 years ago are additional expenses estimated at over 641 thousand dollars in only one year.

This includes economic losses by concept of the material imports for disciplines like baseball, athletics, softball, archery, diving, swimming, tennis, sailing, water polo among others.
