Old Cuban flag exhibited at D.C. embassy returns home

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 12 (acn) The Cuban flag that was exposed in a room of the Cuban embassy in Washington D.C. during the official opening of that facility, will be returned to eastern Las Tunas province where it was treasured for years.

The flag was originally donated to Las Tunas by a great grandchild of Cuban Independence Major General Vicente Garcia in 1997.

According to the secretary of Las Tunas local government Noel Nuñez, the flag will be returned during a solemn ceremony next Sunday, September 13 during at the local plaza.

Later the flag will be exposed for several days inside a glass urn and finally taken to the Major General Vicente Garcia Revolution Square where it will be definitively kept.

The flag was lowered from its mast by worker Garcia Soto, an employee at the Cuban embassy, on January 3, 1961 when the U.S. unilaterally broke relations with Cuba.

The man kept the flag at his residence in the US state of Florida for years till he visited the island and donated to the patrimonial office.
