Military and Political Ceremony Marks Cuba's National Hero Anniversary

Military and Political Ceremony Marks Cuba's National Hero Anniversary SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Jan 28 (acn) A military and political ceremony took place at the Santa Ifigenia cemetery in eastern Santiago de Cuba to mark the 160 anniversary of the National Hero Jose Marti's birthday.

During the ceremony flower wreaths from Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro and President Rraul Castro, as well as those on behalf of the Councils of State and Ministers, were laid at the Jose Marti Memorial.

The guard of honor was made by students from the Jose Maceo Inter-Force Revolutionary Army School and from the Camilo Cienfuegos military School from central Ciego de Avila province, as an acknowledgement to their good results in their training

In the closing speech, First Secretary of the Youth Communist League in the Santiago municipality, Eliecer Sardinas recalled the intense work of Jose Marti to found the Cuban Revolutionary Party, and to organize the 1895 liberation war, which he called Necessary War.

Sardinas said Marti ideals encouraged the Centennial Generation (as Fidel Castro and his men call themselves to mark the hundredth anniversary of Marti's birthday) to attack the Moncada and Cespedes Garrison to overthrow Batista's dictatorship in 1953.

The ceremony was attended by pioneers, workers and people from Santiago de Cuba, as well as the First Secretary of the Communist Party in that province, Lazaro Exposito, and other government and party officials
