HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 16 (acn) German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier is paying an official visit to Cuba July 16 and 17 during which he will meet with Cuban government authorities.
This will be the first time for a German foreign minister to officially visit Havana, Granma newspaper reported on Thursday.
Minister Steinmeier will meet with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez, with Culture minister Julian Gonzalez, according to his agenda.
According to a spokesperson from the German Foreign Ministry, Steinmeier is making an extraordinary trip to Cuba with the aim of improving economic, political and cultural relations.
The visit takes place as Cuba and the European Union hold talks to normalize relations following years under the so-called European Common Position on Cuba, adopted by that block and hindered bilateral relations with the Caribbean island nation.
The German foreign minister will conclude his visit here on Friday afternoon.
