Cuban Dance Season Honors US Ballerina Elfriede Mahler

GUANTANAMO, Cuba, Jan 23 (acn) The season to celebrate the 23rd anniversary of this city's Danza Libre company continued on Wednesday with a lecture dedicated to its founder, US ballerina Elfriede Mahler (1928-1998), one of the figures that have contributed to the development of dance in Cuba.

Leading dancer Alfredo Velazquez, current director of the troupe and faithful disciple of Mahler, was in charge of the colloquium held at the Regino Boti Vocational Art School, which was attended by students and professors of that center that had the US ballerina as its deputy director in 1981.

Also taking part in the lecture were members of the Danza Libre group, the heirs of the style and discipline handed down to them by the dance professor born 85 years ago in Pennsylvania, who settled on the island since the early days of the Revolution and lived in Guantanamo until her death in 1998.

Due to her outstanding work as revolutionary, professor and choreographer, she obtained several prizes in Cuba.

Throughout the year, Danza Libre will promote different activities to honor Mahler, among them a gala in Havana halfway through 2013.
