HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 9 (acn) Glories and workers of the Cuban sports movement paid tribute at the funeral parlor of Calzada and K Streets, in this capital, to the leader of this sector Reynaldo Gonzalez, who died last July 5 in Mexico City.
Tomas Herrera, head of the national commission of attention to athletes, highlighted González´s dedication to work in various roles at the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation up to serve as its president from 1994 to 1997.
He added that González was always a faithful follower of the ideas of the historical leader Fidel Castro, as regards the development of sport, and was also an eternal defender of the results of the athletes of the island, from his demanding responsibilities in foreign organisms.
At the request of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), Reynaldo González worked in that organization as executive secretary, and when dying he was General Coordinator of Olympic Solidarity and member of the International Olympic Committee since 1995.
Tomas Herrera recalled that Gonzalez prompted the collaboration of Cuba in sports with other countries, in accordance with his work linked to the principles of the Olympic solidarity, and always advocated for maintaining active the strategy to overcome.
PASO recalled the legacy of the late Cuban sports official at the opening of its general assembly in the Canadian city of Toronto , just before the start of the Pan American Games, from July 10 to 26.
