HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 10 (acn) Miguel Diaz-Canel, member of the Political Bureau of the Cuban Communist Party and First Vice-president of the Councils of State and Ministers, said on Tuesday in Brussels that there are differences and common challenges between Latin America and the Caribbean and Europe and called for a constructive dialogue between both regions, the Prensa Latina (PL) news agency reported.
Europe long ago proposed an egalitarian relationship with the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean but actually that condition of equality has been never achieved, he expressed in statements to PL.
Therefore, he added, asymmetries and differences in development are increasingly greater. There are also different views on how European and Latin American and Caribbean countries see elements around development, especially the policies to be implemented to achieve it.
In the opinion of Diaz-Canel, who is in Brussels to participate in the 2nd Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and the European Union (EU), there are dissatisfactions in nations in the area with respect to progress in this bi-regional alliance, and the current forum is ideal to review this and propose goals to perfect this relationship.
We are in a time when we see that there is more political will on the part of European countries to have a dialogue based on respect and non-interference, a dialogue that is non-discriminatory towards the nations of the region, he stressed.
Despite the existence of differences, bi-regional and international cooperation is needed to survive in this complex world, he said, adding that there are common challenges but that there is also capacity to address them and achieve cooperation in fields such as sustainable development, social issues, health, public safety, migration issues, the fight against drugs, among others.
The top Cuban official said there is a whole favorable scenario to have a constructive dialogue and that both the CELAC as Cuba attend the summit with that objective in mind.
I believe there are conditions for real progress, even more mature than in other moments, he concluded.
