Expert of University of Columbia Praises Cuban Achievements in Soil Protection

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 6 (acn) Pedro Sanchez, director of the Agriculture and Food Security Center of the Earth Institute of the New York University of Columbia, highlighted Cuba's achievements in soil protection.
He pointed out that the Caribbean nation has highly qualified professionals who conduct studies and technical applications in areas affected by erosion, salinity or low presence of minerals, allowing its recovery and increasing yields.
This renowned expert, a pioneer in the use of ways to recover soil fertility in Africa and Latin America, praised the creation of comprehensive polygons to train farmers.
He explained that his participation in the 7th International Congress on Soil, that wound up on Friday in this capital, responds to the interest of his university to start agronomy research works with several Cuban institutions, such as the institutes of Agricultural Sciences and Soil, respectively.
Sanchez said he sees a promising future for the specialty in Cuba as well as the possibility of academic exchanges, following the gradual reestablishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
He pointed out that Cuban soils are the best in the tropical area, especially the red ferralitic soils of the west, where the largest amount of food for the population is produced, for which he called mainly youth to join farming and make thousands of acres left idle produce.
