Cuba Flour Production Already Meets Local Demand

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 21 (ACN) As a result of the national strategy to replace costly food imports from the world market, the Cuban flour industry is now able to meet the local demand of the product, calculated at some 150 thousand tons.

The industry produced 100 thousand tons of flour in 2010, the figure increased to 139 thousand in 2011, and last year Cuba began to meet the total national demand of the product, said the director of the Cuban Flour Industry Maria Victoria Rabelo.

The island used to dedicate 600 dollars to purchase one ton of flour at the international market and the achievement now allows saving 100 dollars in the production of each ton, the official said.

The advancement came in after significant investment and reorganization of the flour industry, which expects to produce 500 thousand tons of flour by 2015 given the increasing trend of the local demand.

In order to achieve the production increase the industry will replace old milling equipment in its facilities. The sector is also expected to strengthen its economic performance, improve its corporative image and achieve the full certification of its quality system.
