Colombian Foreign Minister arrives in Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba, May 29 (acn) Colombia´s foreign minister Maria Angela Holguin is arriving in Cuba on Thursday to join the current peace talks between the Colombian government and the FARC guerrillas amidst huge tensions by growing hostility.

The foreign minister is being accompanied by businessman Gonzalo Restrepo and both will join the government negotiating team.

Despite growing hostilities the two sides have said they will keep negotiations to reach the end of the armed conflict that has hit Colombia over the past 50 years.

Cuba and Norway, the two warrantor countries to the peace talks, called on the parties to make efforts and save the negotiations and they expressed their deep concern about the current escalation of the armed conflict.

At present, the parties are involved in the 37 round of talks, which will wind up on Sunday and is addressing the issue related to the compensations of the victims of the conflict. Some 220 thousand Colombians have been killed in the conflict as six million others have been displaced.

The two sides have reached accord in three out of six point on the talks´ agenda, along with a mine-cleaning program, which was stalled with the escalation of the armed conflict.
