HAVANA, Cuba, May 15 (acn) Focusing on getting the most out of production potentials, Cuban farmers opened the 11th Congress of the National Small Farmers Association, which groups some 400 thousand private and cooperative farmers throughout the island.
The forum will run till Sunday at Havana´s Conventions Hall with the participation of 700 delegates and 150 guests, representing the farmer´s organization, known by its acronyms ANAP.
Organization president Rafael Santiesteban said that the farmers have increased their production in several areas, such as rice, beans and corn, also with considerable growth were the outputs of pork and bee honey.
However, not all the production potential has been yet fully exploited, particularly in cooperative farms, said the farmer leader as he referred to the need to replace costly food imports with local production.
The organization is also involved in extending scientific advances to all its structures in order to achieve more efficient yield, said the official.
The increase of agricultural production is a strategic goal in Cuba to achieve food security and economic development, and in this regard the Small Famers´ Organization plays a crucial role.
