HAVANA, May 7 (acn) A strong local storm hard hit eastern Las Tunas city on Thursday by felling trees, and causing floods that affected streets and homes and cuts of power with damage that has not yet been calculated.
Civil Defense forces and firefighters rapidly deployed in the affected areas and evacuated the people to safe places, Tiempo 21 radio station reported.
Weather experts said that the wind gusts were as strong as 79 kilometers per hour, while sustained winds reached 37 kms per hour. In just 37 minutes local rainfall accumulates were calculated at 43 millimeters.
Amidst severe and prolonged drought, the city of Las Tunas has now received its second intense shower this year, though this time it caused damage to the urban area.
