Cuban Five honored in Caracas

HAVANA, Cuba, May 5 (acn) The five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters, who were held in US prisons for over 16 years, are visiting Venezuela, where they were granted the keys to that sister Latin American city.

"Since I stepped on Venzuelan soil I knew that no Cuban needs a key to enter the city of Caracas," said Rene Gonzalez, one of the five in direct reference to the strong friendship uniting Venezuelans and Cubans.

During a visit to the centrally located squared named after the Liberator Simon Bolivar, the Cuban Five were welcomed by local government authorities, Cuban workers who are working in different social programs and by members of the Association of Cuban Residents in Venezuela.

The Mayor of the Libertador Municipality, Jorge Rodriguez, welcomed the five heroes to Caracas and granted Rene Gonzalez the Eliezer Otaiza Order.

Upon receiving the order, Gonzalez said on behalf of his four compatriots that he was happy to be in the homeland of Bolivar and Chavez and he thanked the gestures of affection and solidarity by the Venezuelan government and people towards their Cuban brothers and sisters.

The five Cubans will also be welcomed at the National Pantheon, which treasures the mortal remains of Simon Bolivar and other martyrs of Latin American independence.
