Heavy rains wreak havoc in Eastern CubanHAVANA, Cuba, May 5 (acn) Intense rains in the last days caused partial damages to hundreds of houses, the electrical grid, crops and some roads in the mountainous municipality of Baracoa, in Cuban easternmost Guantanamo province.

The heavy rains, some 350 millimeters in two days, caused rivers in the region to burst their banks and flood several neighborhoods in Baracoa city, mainly in those located behind the Manuel Fuentes baseball stadium.

Also, a tornado hit the neighborhood of Bermejal, in the outskirts of the city that destroyed 4 houses and damaged the roofs of another 250.

Reports published by Granma newspaper said the rains wreaked havoc on cacao seedlings, irrigation systems and roads in the towns of Quivijan and Cajuajo, as well as in schools and health facilities.

Antonio Ramos, president of the Civil Defense Council of the municipality, told Granma they activated their forces to start the recovery process.

At the time of this information, rains had stopped and the city inhabitants are involved in the recovery works throughout the city
