HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 10 (ACN) Floral wreaths sent by Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro and by President Raul Castro accompanied the tribute paid by the Cuban youth on Thursday to the founder of the University Student Federation (FEU), Julio Antonio Mella, in the 84th anniversary of his assassination in Mexico.
The youths gathered at the Mella Memorial, at the foot of the stairs of the University of Havana, which treasures the mortal remains of the student leader, who also founded the first Cuban Marxist-Leninist Party. Other wreaths on behalf of the Cuban Councils of State and Ministers and the Cuban youths were also laid at the site.
Julio Antonio Mella has been a combat flag and symbol for the Cuban youths and the people since January 10, 1929 when he was gunned down in Mexico by paid assassins at the orders of Tyrant Gerardo Machado, said FEU vice-president at the Havana University Yoandry Ferrales.
A major factor in Mella's legacy was the student organization that he founded to fight for the rights of the students, for our homeland and humanity, said Ferrales.
Cuban students throughout the country are marking the date with lectures, scientific workshops on the ideas of that outstanding youth, as well as book presentations and visits to places linked to his brief but fruitful life.
