HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 19 (acn) The Cuban National Electoral Commission (CEN) reported that 58.1 percent of Cuban registered voters had shown at the polling stations before 11 am.
CEN´s VP Ruben Perez said that 4,874,978 Cubans had already cast their ballots in the 24,646 polling stations located in each of the 15 Cuban provinces and the municipality of Isle of Youth,
Perez told reporters that the municipal elections are running as usual, with no incidents to report, a tradition in this kind of processes where the Cuban people use their citizens' right to choose their representatives.
He added that the Cuban Five, already in their homeland after serving unjust sentences in the US for fighting terrorism, had voted for the first time in almost two decades.
¨This is something that fills us with pride and encouragement during these elections, ¨he said.
The polling stations will be open till 6 pm, he reiterated. If needed, a second round of the elections will take place on April 26.
