HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 19 (acn) Over 300 university students are working as observers in the municipal elections in the Cuban westernmost province of Pinar del Rio, and thousands more are in polling stations throughout the country.
After receiving training for months, the students check the quality of the voting process while learning firsthand why the Cuban electoral system is one of the most democratic ones in the world.
In statements to the press present at the stations, the youngsters said there is great transparency in what they are seeing, and that they were proud to do the task entrusted to them.
Claudia Díaz Pereda, a senior student of industrial engineering, said they arrived before the opening of the polling stations to check all requirements were met before the casting of ballots started.
We will stay in our posts all day long, and notify officials if we see any irregularity, she said.
¨I am sure that will not be the case, since we can see the good organization and the active and orderly participation of voters, fulfilling their civic right¨, she said.
The President of the Provincial Electoral Commission, Jorge Cirion, said the students´ collaboration helps in the organization of the municipal elections and this contributes to their comprehensive training as full members of society.
