HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 19 (acn) The President of the National Electoral Commission (CEN) Alina Balseiro, said municipal elections are running in Cuba in a successful and safe way.
The 24,646 polling stations placed in all 12,589 municipal assembly posts, opened uneventfully at 7 this morning, including the 2,393 that are in private houses, Balseiro said at the CEN press office in Havana's municipality of Playa.
We haven't had any shortages of materials at the polling stations and comms have worked perfectly this far, she said.
On her first report, two hours after the start of the elections, Balseiro said work is intense and dynamic all over the country.
This is the first round of the 2015 municipal elections in Cuba, where over 8 million Cubans have been called to exercise their right to choose their representatives at the Municipal Assemblies of the People´s Power.
Close to 28 thousand candidates won the endorsement from their neighbors in a show-of-hands vote at public meetings between February 24 and March 25. A second round of the elections will be called for April 26 in those posts where candidates don't reach 50 percent plus one of the votes.
