Cuban rangers issue red alert on fires for April

HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 2 (acn) The Ranger Corps of Cuba (CGC by its Spanish acronym) warned in this city on the extreme danger of the fourth month of the year for forest fires.

Historically, this date is most conducive for the formation of fires in vegetation zones, as this month marks the end of dry period in the country, Colonel Manuel Lama Gómez, CGC head, said at a press conference.

In his view, the danger is extreme because there is little awareness of the risks associated with these disasters, which affect not only the economy but also the environment, biodiversity and human health.

Lama Gómez explained that so far this year, 1,077 hectares of forest have been damaged by 277 fires, although more than 86 percent of them were extinguished before reaching five hectares.

According to the expert, human activity continues to generate almost all of these disasters, with the highest incidence in negligent actions when making fires for various purposes.

The head of the CGC also praised the performance of those who, without the necessary material resources, work together with the body of the Ministry of Interior to extinguish flames in forests and abundant vegetation areas.

He highlighted the close coordination that has been achieved between forest companies, CGC and vulnerable towns to watch and counteract forest fires.
According to CGC statistics, since 1995, 381 forest fires occur annually in Cuba, with damages to 4 300 wooded acres.
