Anti-drug exercise focuses on student sector

GUANTANAMO, Cuba,May 21 (ACN) An integral exercise of prevention and confrontation to the possession, trafficking and consumption of illicit substances was carried out today at the Ruben Lopez Sabariego Basic High School, in this easternmost city, with the purpose of preventing and fighting against the use of drugs.

During the exchange - in the context of the 3rd National Exercise on Drug Prevention and Confrontation, which began on May 19 - psychologists, social workers, teachers and officers of the Revolutionary Armed Forces offered information to the students on the current situation of drug use and its consequences.

Manuel Perez Ruiz, advisor for preventive work in the Provincial General Directorate of Education, explained that in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, the Government Directorate and the Communist Party of Cuba in the province, prevention and exchange activities are carried out in 20 educational centers of Basic Secondary, Pre-university and Technical and Professional education.

The results indicate that young people and adolescents have appropriated the necessary knowledge to promote a culture of rejection towards drugs; so far, since the beginning of the exercise, there have been no reported cases of students consuming any narcotic drug in schools, said Perez Ruiz.

Perez Ruiz added that these actions are also carried out in the communities and with the families, especially those considered risk factors, who are advised to be attentive to emotional changes, friendships, and to talk to their children about this scourge and its consequences on their health.

In about seven basic secondary schools in the city of Guantanamo, a debate will be held this week with students on drugs, which, in addition to the serious damage to physical health, interfere in the relationship with the environment, family and work, and can seriously compromise the learning process, especially in the case of young people and adolescents, and increase the risk of suffering all kinds of accidents.
