Cuba assesses management of its geological services

 HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 18 (ACN) One of the main results in 2024 of the geology sector in Cuba consisted in the fact that its personnel served in 111 objectives of 32 entities of 10 business groups or agencies.

The efforts in that regard allowed the completion and approval of 24 reports of the plan and eight scientific researches of the program called Integral Characterization of the Geology of Cuba, both in their corresponding strategic lines.

PhD in Technical Sciences Enrique Castellanos Abella, director of Geology of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, also informed the Cuban News Agency that the prospecting of gold and copper La Union, in charge of Camagüey Geominera Company, was concluded, where they identified the mineral with its corresponding grade and estimates of the second metal.

Due to the importance of this discovery, he continued, it was decided to move on to geological exploration of the southwest part of the deposit and to start immediately.

The expert indicated that the gold prospecting in the Melonera-Oropesa strip, carried out by Geominera Centro and initiated years ago, was also completed, which made it possible to recognize two sectors for exploration.

Regarding non-metallic minerals, Castellanos Abella mentioned the approval of the geological prospecting-exploration of Carbonato La Isabel by the company Geominera Isla, a project started in 2021, in an action aimed at the delivery of its calcium carbonate resources for use in mortars, paints and agromine production.

Meanwhile, the company Geominera Oriente finished the diagnosis of construction materials in the easternmost province of Guantanamo, which will allow a more efficient use of raw materials for construction programs in the territory.

In turn, two projects for the identification and characterization of mining environmental liabilities expired in 2024, one in the province of Las Tunas, carried out by Geocuba Oriente Norte, and the other in Isla de la Juventud, carried out by Inversiones Gamma.
