Cuba and European Union Advance Dialog towards General Accord

HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 6 (acn) The executive director for The Americas with the European External Action Service, Christian Leffler said that the third round of negotiations held in Havana March 4 and 5 towards a political accord between the European Union and Cuba evidenced the constructive and committed spirit of the two parties.

During a news conference held at the Havana-based European Union Office, Leffler said he was convinced that if such advance continues they will achieve important progress in an upcoming round of talks based on proposals, compromises and ideas of both delegations.

The European representative explained that during talks on Thursday with the Cuban delegation, headed by deputy foreign minister Abelardo Moreno, they presented the chapters related to political dialog and commerce, which included topics like sovereignty, human rights, peace, security and the fight against terrorism.

Leffler also said that the talks aimed at setting up a platform to expand relations, create more solid structures and a constructive dialog that allows identifying areas for political and economic cooperation.

As to the December 17 announcement by Cuba and the United States to work towards the reestablishment diplomatic relations and further normalization of bilateral links, the European representative said that the event is positive for Cuba and for the United States and also for the European Community and regional partners.

The negotiations held this week in Havana are part of the third round of talks between Cuba and the European Union to achieve a political and cooperation accord.
