HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 20 (ACN) It is of utmost importance to transform and improve the road safety system in the country to guarantee the lives of our citizens, said Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, Cuban deputy prime minister, today in Havana.
In a speech at the corresponding national commission, held at the Ministry of Transportation (MITRANS) through video conference, he said that it is essential to adopt all necessary measures to preserve the existence of both drivers and pedestrians.
In this sense, he proposed that each provincial and municipal grouping, in a three-month period, evaluate its main logistical difficulties and when it considers solving them, starting from its confrontation and control actions on the road in a systematic way.
For his part, Eduardo Rodriguez Davila, head of Mitrans, expressed his agreement with Tapia Fonseca and in the projections for 2025 announced the collection of commitments of all groups in the sector, the incorporation of accident indicators to the National Transport Council, as well as the nation's universities.
In addition, the increase of divulgation, in coordination with the Institute of Information and Social Communication, the review of the capacities of the Road Education and Driving Schools in Cuba, due to the increase in the demand for licenses for equipment and motorcycles, and the creation of their infrastructure.
The human factor continues to be the most responsible for the accident rate in Cuba and has become a health problem, so it is necessary to give it the appropriate attention and seek solutions as soon as possible, it was also reported at the meeting.
In 2024 there were more than 7,500 accidents of this type, with a 12, 13 and four % decrease, respectively, in the number of fatalities and injuries, according to statistics from the Specialized Traffic Body of the National Revolutionary Police, based on risk factors, causes and conditions that provoke them.
