Cuban entities reassert support for energy transition

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 19 (ACN) CUBASOLAR, the Cuban Society for the Promotion of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Environmental Respect, ratified its support to the national energy transition process, urged to preserve its human capital, and suggested ideas to promote its policy at grassroots level, an endeavor undertaken a decade ago to boost RES development and efficiency, according to its president, ScD Luis Bérriz Pérez, in his words to the ongoing XV CUBASOLAR International Workshop.

The purpose is to make the most of such an abundant local resource to turn Cuba more self-sufficient in this field and power generation, distribution and consumption more effective with a view to cost reduction and environmental sustainability.

“We must keep building wind and solar farms and bagasse-based hydroelectric and bioelectric plants as planned, and every municipality must capitalize on compost and agricultural residues to produce biogas and other sources used to cook foods and make construction materials”, he stressed.

Ramses Montes Calzadilla, director of Energy Policy and Strategy of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, described the entity’s initiative “Energy Transition in Cuba”, aimed at reducing imports of fossil fuels.

CUBASOLAR's General Assembly acknowledged the efforts of members of organizations, centers and institutions and of specialists from Colombia, Guatemala and Honduras, as well as of the Spanish NGOs Solidaridad para el Desarrollo y la Paz (SODePAZ) and Cooperación al Desarrollo Mundubat y Justicia Alimentaria, in addition to the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and FAO.
