PAHO and Cuban experts conduct study of disability in the country

Osmara Delgado Sanchez, national coordinator of programs of attention to people with disabilities of the Ministry of Public Health, said that among the main achievements are the implementation of the international classification to know the types of condition and the limitations for social life.

She pointed out that more than 25,000 people were analyzed, with cognitive functions, walking and vision among the most affected, which must be taken into account for the design of services and accessibility to work or study centers.

The main limitations of these population groups were also identified, among them, remembering pending tasks, having a conversation, self-care, economic functionality and participation in community activities were the most common, said the expert.

She stressed that based on these scientific elements, it will be possible to improve living conditions, work or study options, extension activities that allow for better quality of care and the elimination of architectural barriers.

Dr. Luis Orlando Castro, Deputy Director General of Public Health, emphasized aspects such as hospitalization, care, social integration and work performance, which are essential for public policies and the maintenance of the social programs of the Cuban Revolution.

He reaffirmed the commitment to care for people with disabilities as well as the provision of inclusive and excellent services that allow optimal development, prioritizing the elderly and children, adolescents and young people.

The study sponsored by the Pan American Health Organization and initiated in November 2023, included study centers, work, state entities, to determine the functionality of the population, accessibility to services and strategies to improve them.

The province of Holguin, with a disability prevalence rate of 3.8 %, above the national average, also has reference care services such as ataxia, retinitis and albinism, in addition to highly qualified personnel in specialties such as Rehabilitation, Defectology and Social Work, as well as the integration of authorities and organizations.
