Cuban president congratulates city of Santa Clara on its 35th anniversary

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 15 (ACN) Miguel Diaz-Canel, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and president of the country, congratulated today the residents of the central city of Santa Clara on its 335th birthday.

According to local media, the celebrations of this central territory will begin at El Carmen Park, Santa Clara's foundational site, to be followed by the Solemn Session of the Municipal Government Assembly at the Central University of Las Villas.

In the afternoon, the City Foundation Literary Award will be presented at the Marti Provincial Library, and in the evening, the presentations of Adalberto Alvarez y su Son and Guzman y su Poder Latino are expected at the Sandino recreational area.

Located in the south central portion of the province of Villa Clara and crossed by the Belico and Cubanicay rivers belonging to the basin of the Sagua la Grande river, Santa Clara was founded on July 15, 1689 by settlers from the village of San Juan de los Remedios who moved to the center of the island motivated by the permanent siege of corsairs and pirates.

The event took place on the banks of the Sabana River, today Belico, a few meters from El Carmen Park, where a commemorative monument stands, since 1951, around a tamarind tree, heir, it is said, of the one who saw in its shadow officiate the founding mass of the settlement.
