Cuba applies bioproducts for coffee cultivation

HAVANA, Cuba, Jul 5 (ACN) In order to boost coffee cultivation in the municipality of San Luis, in the Cuban eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, bioproducts are applied in the seedlings of this exportable crop, which contribute to its nutrition, quality and strength in the arabica and robusta varieties.

This use of science in function of production is part of a group of actions led by the Agroforestry Cooperative Development Project (Prodecafe) to increase coffee production volumes and contribute to improve resilience to climate change of small farmers' cooperatives in the eastern region of the country.

Elsi Maria Rivero Gonzales, coordinator of this initiative, explained exclusively to the Cuban News Agency that with the use of Viucid they have managed to obtain postures with excellent physiology, in terms of diameter and height, which contributes to the quality of the grain.

According to the specialist, the acceleration of seed germination is observed and the growth of coffee seedlings is accelerated, with an increase of between 35 and 48 % in leaf area compared to the control without application.

The introduction of this biofertilizer is generalized in the country, after alliances with the company Catalisis of Spain, and studies are being carried out with it in the Agroforestry Experimental Station of Tercer Frente, according to the source.

Among other results obtained, Rivero Gonzales mentioned that it provides greater tolerance to pests and contributes to invigorate the plants from germination to the fruiting process.
