HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 25 (ACN) Strategies to evaluate inventories and rates of Blue Carbon sequestration in Cuba are the focus of a national workshop organized jointly with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and coordinated as well by the Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technologies Agency and the Center for Environmental Studies of the province of Cienfuegos.
Blue carbon refers to organic carbon that is captured and stored by the oceans and coastal ecosystems, particularly by mangrove forests, salt marshes, swamps, seagrass, peat bogs, and macroalgae.
According to the Cuban Network of Nuclear Communicators, the workshop is part of the technical cooperation project called Strengthening the health of marine ecosystems for sustainable development in Cuba: an integrated approach using nuclear and isotopic techniques, which addressed Blue Carbon-related issues.
