PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba, Feb 6 (acn) After several months of travel, the 36 members of the German sailboat Thor Heyerdahl arrived in the city of Pinar del Río, territory where they will remain until February 11.
According to Sergio Abreu Hernandez, delegate of the Cuban Friendship Institute (ICAP by its Spanish acronym), the crew will make a bicycle tour through various points of Pinar del Rio geography, to become familiar with the country's reality and multiply it in their hometowns.
He stressed that at Frederick Engels Vocational Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences the 34 German students shall exchange with students and teachers of the center, due to the proximity of ages, in addition to deploying a comprehensive sports and cultural program; in addition they will donate their bikes after concluding their stay.
He added that they will visit sites of economic and social interest in the town of Viñales, including a cooperative, where they will know characteristics of tobacco crop, hallmark of Pinar del Río.
Meanwhile, Ruth Merk, director of the project Classes under sail, executed on the sailboat, said they aim to contribute to the training of young people in the midst of a complex and globalized world, to which they aspire to develop their sense of responsibility and initiative.
She also referred to the routine on the ship, in which they combine study with work for six months, in order to strengthen relations between them.
After completing their tour of Pinar del Río, they will leave for Havana and then in small groups, will go to Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Holguin and Santiago de Cuba.
In October 2014, the vessel sailed from Kiel, Germany, to the Canary Islands, Lesser Antilles, Panama and Cuba, to continue journey to Bermuda and the Azores, following the path of great explorers like Christopher Columbus and Alexander Humboldt.
