HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 6 (acn) Two Cuban professionals won the "Youth and Social Networking" prize, organized by the Union of Universities of Latin America and the Caribbean (UDUAL by is Spanish acronym), an organization which is part of the University of Havana ( UH), which hosted the award ceremony.
The philosopher Giselle Armas and engineer Yorlandys Salgado, who are a couple in real l ife, also joined in labor to inquire about the use Cuban youth make of social networks .
Exclusively, Armas explained that the questionnaires they applied showed that over 40% of respondents had an uncritical use of these sites.
On one side it is gratifying to see that about 60% do are questioners –she said, but those who passively assume them must understand that these are others of the ways of reproduction of capitalist system, on a global scale, given the scope of new technologies.
The authors agreed that it is a challenge the coexistence of these phenomena with Cuban socialist system, therefore they must be ignored or condemned, because they are today one of the main channels through which public opinion is moving and political debate is generated.
Francisco González, UH Informatics vice Rector and member of the international jury that awarded the prize to Armas and Salgado, highlighted the fact that the winners came from careers as diverse as Philosophy and Electrical Engineering.
That gives us a double satisfaction because it is one of those rare occasions when studies of Mass Communication transcend the division between Humanities and Technical Sciences, and because it shows the prestige that our graduates have achieved at the international level, he stated.
The Mexican professor Roberto Escalante, UDUAL general secretary, congratulated the recently graduated for being the young needed today: innovative, creative, but without forgetting that the values and equity must always be in the middle of that innovation and creativity.
The new generations are called to seek new paths, but can not jump to cross them without restraint, he said, because in this globalized society we live in, not all roads lead to Rome.
