Cuban central province committed to producing electricity from sunlight

SANTO DOMINGO, Villa Clara, Cuba, Apr 2 (ACN) Santo Domingo is one of the municipalities of Villa Clara most committed to the country's call for the necessary change in the energy matrix, based on the efficient investment in renewable sources that replace the burning of fossil fuels and thus contribute to the care of the environment.

At present, the territory is promoting the incorporation of solar energy to industrial production and is planning the completion of two photovoltaic parks FP: La Criolla, with more than 90 % of the installation completed, and Bermejal, where the initial earthworks are still being carried out for the corresponding assembly.

Carlos Ruben Armas Diaz, director of the Agustin Rodriguez Mena rum factory, located in the George Washington agro-sugar demarcation of Santo Domingo, told the Cuban News Agency that for the past eight years they have had solar panels (SP) attached to the roofs of the entity's warehouses, which allows them to produce electricity endogenously and independently.

The center consumes only 40% of the electricity generated during the day and the rest is transferred to the National Electric System, also as part of a well thought-out program of extended benefit to the community, he explained.

Armas Diaz also specified that the external lighting of the facilities has a solid system of lamps connected exclusively to SP to guarantee night services without the need to increase the demand for alternating current in the region.

In the case of La Criolla, already in the completion phase, 8,480 panels with a power of more than 4 megawatts have been installed, Ernesto Mora Alvarez, representative of the National Renewable Energy Sources Company, assured.

For the execution of the two Santo Domingo FPs, feasibility studies were carried out to certify the effectiveness of the project and other similar ones are planned for Santa Clara, Placetas, Sagua la Grande and Quemado Hilario, although the latter are still in the approval and financing search phase.
