Aquaculture company substitutes imports in eastern Cuba

HOLGUIN, Cuba, Mar 26 (ACN) The substitution of imports in order to reduce the country's expenses and benefit vulnerable population groups is being promoted by the Acuanipe Business Unit, attached to the Holguin Fishing Enterprise (PescaHol), in the northeastern territory.

Osvaldo Perez Duerto, general director of the entity located in Mayari, explained to the Cuban News Agency that apart from the food produced, among which hamburgers, minced meat and meatballs stand out, they are in charge of supplying fish from fish farming to all the medical diets of seven municipalities of Holguin.

Among them are the provincial capital, Mayari, Moa, Cueto and Banes, which eliminates the cost of importing this item, since they obtain up to two tons of the different aquaculture species from their centers, he said.

Perez Duerto commented that, in order to increase their productions and contribute more to the population, during the year they intend to distribute 15 million hatchlings to several reservoirs such as Nipe, Biran, Bio Paso and Mayari, and they have joined forces with the agricultural sector to promote the practice from bio-dams.

The executive added that the priorities of the entity include favoring communities and institutions that serve vulnerable groups, among which are Casas de Abuelos and popular councils of some municipalitie, which have received donations and sales of their products at reasonable prices.

The Ministry of Food Industry promotes this type of production throughout the country due to its low environmental impact and the variety of specimens and edible derivatives that it allows, where the extensive cultivation of cyprinids, better known as tench, stands out.
