Iberostar Selection Varadero hotel in Cuba excels for its sustainable approach

VARADERO, Cuba, Mar 5 (ACN) The reduction of single-use plastics and the use of renewable energy sources back up the commitment to the environment of the Iberostar Selection Varadero hotel, an attraction for international vacationers this season.

Juan Diego Fortun Abascal, general director of the facility, told the Cuban News Agency in an exclusive interview that giving preference to cups and other reusable containers reduces the polluting load and means a notable saving in economic terms.

We bottle our own water in glass containers thanks to a plant located in the hotel, thus reducing dependence on plastic containers that usually end up in the sea, said the director of the five-star, 386-room facility.

Lisaidys Mavis West Cowans, head of sustainability at the Iberostar Selection Varadero, pointed out that an automated system controls the activity of lights and kitchen equipment identified as having the highest consumption, to ensure more efficient operation.

For her part, Maurin Ojeda Aguila, a quality specialist, noted that the use of solar panels in the so-called Block 20 and the central building reduces the consumption of energy carriers and covers approximately 30 % of the demand.

She stated that the hotel has certified its energy management system, in accordance with the Cuban standard 50001 of 2019, and will soon receive an inspection from a Mexican certifying company.
