In 2023, Cuba's population continued its trend of aging and natural decrease. During the period, approximately 90,300 births were registered, the lowest figure in the last six decades.
This inertial behavior of demographic indicators poses numerous challenges for territorial governments, organizations, academic institutions and social actors in general.
In view of this scenario, the understanding, attention and control of the demographic situation requires a change of mentality, urged the member of the Political Bureau and Prime Minister, Manuel Marrero Cruz, when leading, at the Palace of the Revolution, the most recent meeting of the Governmental Commission that deals with these matters.
In evaluating the implementation of the measures approved in the country, the head of government called for seeking solutions based on local resources, and to follow up on the indicators that reflect progress and deficiencies.
"We are talking about government projections to correct distortions, and here there are many distortions, and to re-drive the economy in this matter is to comply with everything we have proposed, because all this directly impacts the population", he stressed.
In his opinion, there has to be a monthly evaluation by each of the sub-commissions and also at the national level. "We are going to see which territories are lagging behind, why they are not complying, with names and surnames," the Prime Minister emphasized.
We will always have the dissatisfaction of those things we cannot achieve, but that has to make us grow to seek alternative solutions, he said, while noting that the demographic dynamics must be given the priority it deserves in each of the agencies involved.
Although it is true that the financial and material resource limitations faced by the country have had a negative impact on the implementation of the Policy for the Attention to Demographic Dynamics, Marrero Cruz indicated to analyze, in an exhaustive manner, the causes of the non-compliance in programs and indicators of greater impact on the population.
He also reiterated the urgency of incorporating attention to demographic dynamics as a priority element in economic and social development strategies at the territorial and local levels.
In this regard, the first deputy minister of economy and planning, Mildrey Granadillo de la Torre, pointed out that the 2024 Plan focuses, among other actions, on those related to the operation of grandparents' homes, homes for the elderly and the increase of capacities in children's circles.
During the meeting, participants also stressed the need to take a deep and comprehensive look at issues related to the decrease in the overall fertility rate and the attention to the elderly, the only population group that has been growing in recent years.
