International school of nuclear methods starts classes in Cuban province

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 26 (ACN) Young scientists from Latin America and the Caribbean begin today in the western province of Matanzas the classes corresponding to the International School of Nuclear Methods and Applied Research in Environmental, Materials and Life Sciences, something that takes place for the first time in Cuba.

Under the organization of the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research of Dubna, Russia (JINR) and the support of the Agency of Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technologies (AENTA). Students from several countries in the region, including Cuba, Costa Rica, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, take part in the lessons.

Also specialists from the Center for Radiation Protection and Hygiene, one of the groups of that agency, from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA by its Spanish acronym) and a scientific and directive representation of the JINR.

Latchesar K. Kostov, vice director of JINR, gave a lecture at the opening ceremony of the meeting, in which he commented on his institution and the composition of its laboratories, each with its own specialty, where its lines of research are summarized in three main areas: particle, nuclear and condensed matter physics.

Kostov was accompanied by MSc. Gladys Lopez Bejerano, president of the Agency for Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technologies; Ph.D. Gonzalo Walwyn, Cuba's representative in the JINR, and Ph.D. Ivan Padron, director of the Center for Technological Applications and Nuclear Development (CEADEN).

According to its program, the objective is to train and strengthen scientific cooperation between the Unified Institute for Nuclear Research of Dubna, Russia and Cuba, related to research and development of nuclear sciences and the study of the fundamental properties of matter.
