Cuba and Russia Strengthen Bilateral Relations

Havana, Jan 26 (ACN) Cuban ambassador to Russia Julio Garmendia stressed the strategic and historic relations between Havana and Moscow during a reception in Moscow marking the 65 anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, in the presence of high-level Russian officials.

Garmendia recalled the historic bilateral relations and the support of the USSR during difficult years of the Cuban Revolution, following its victory in 1959.

He noted that Moscow and Havana signed important accords in 2023 to boost Russian investment in Cuban economy. He explain that such actions would help implement joint projects in areas like tourism, agriculture, industry, health, energy, among others of mutual interest.

This year marks the six decades of the founding by Cuban commander Ernesto Che Guevara and Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin of the Russia-Cuba Friendship Society, said the ambassador.

The diplomat told participants that despite the difficulties facing Cuba due to the strengthened US blockade of the island and the inclusion of Cuba on the US list of states sponsors of terrorism, Cubans will overcome.

The ceremony was presided over by Russia’s first vice-president of the lower Chamber of Parliament (Duma) Ivan Melnikov, deputy foreign minister Serguei Riabkov and deputy Defense minister Alexander Fomin.
