Cuban central province recalled passage of the Freedom Caravan

CIEGO DE AVIA, Cuba, Jan 5 (ACN) Pioneers and people in general gathered this morning at the crossroads of Antonio Maceo and Chicho Torres streets, in the capital of Ciego de Avila, to remember the presence there of the members of the Rebel Army who came in the Caravan of Freedom on a day like today, but 65 years ago.

In that downtown place of the city, a political and cultural event was held to commemorate the event of January 5, 1959, in which men, women, children and young people, in a sign of gratitude, hugged the bearded men who had just arrived from the Sierra Maestra.

This Friday's meeting, presided over by Nexy Veliz Naranjo, member of the Provincial Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba, and Governor Alfre Menendez Perez, was an appropriate moment to recognize the agents of public order, whose organ is the National Revolutionary Police, which this Friday reached its 65th anniversary with the task of preserving the tranquility of the citizens.

Nailyn Machado Avila, member of the National Committee of the Young Communist League (UJC by its Spanish acronym) and its first secretary in Ciego de Avila, expressed to those present that remembering historical events like this is a lesson not to forget, because they fought to never again be subjected to a bloody dictatorship that responds to the orders of the US governments in office.

The leader of the UJC also called to defend the legacy of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro and to keep in mind that in that caravan not only heroes were traveling, but also the hope of millions of people in the country.

She urged the youth to continue supporting, as up to now, the call of President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, to be present in any front of the economy and services, and to safeguard the achievements of the Revolution.

Jose Martin Suarez Alvarez, historian of the Provincial Center of Cultural Heritage, told the Cuban News Agency that the guerrillas of the Rebel Army entered the capital of the current province of Ciego de Avila in the early hours of dawn on January 5, but Commander in Chief Fidel Castro did so in the afternoon-evening of that day with Celia Sanchez and other comrades.
