Isle of Youth in Cuba, weather alert for extratropical low

NUEVA GERONA, Cuba, Dec 15 (ACN) The Municipal Defense Council (CDM) of the Isle of Youth - in reduced composition - issued an early warning alert in order to preserve human life and goods of the economy because of the influence over western Cuba of an extratropical low with associated cold front.

Although the CDM is not officially activated, it is anticipating the adoption of measures to minimize vulnerabilities before the dangerous situation that will cause the deterioration of weather conditions, Chief Alexei Fernandez Rubio Perez, head of the Civil Defense body of the special military sector, told the Cuban News Agency.

He emphasized that associated with this event, tornadoes, heavy rains and hail may occur in some localities.

Adiel Morera Macias, municipal intendant, stated that the deconcentration of goods in the port of Batabano was indicated, where flooding due to sea penetration is expected to occur, among other decisions in order to avoid damage to the economy.

Meteorologist Luis Sanchez Suarez warned about the dangers associated with the extratropical low and the cold front that during the afternoon of this Saturday, December 16 is forecast to affect the special municipality.

He suggested to the authorities of the territory to maintain strict vigilance on the low areas of the coast, specifically where the Carapachibey lighthouse and the Ecological Reserve of Punta del Este (Playa Blanca and Playa Larga) are located, enclaves in which there is an important human population settlement for the territory.
