Cuba committed to inclusive use of technology

VARADERO, Cuba, Nov 8 (ACN) Wilfredo González Vidal, first deputy minister of the Ministry of Communications (MINCOM), highlighted the efforts of the Cuban State and Government in favor of gender equality and the engagement of women and persons with disabilities in technological fields.

At the official opening Wednesday of the regional event Accessible Americas 2023, the official said that Cuba has proved to be fully committed to digital inclusion through steps to ensure ICT accessibility.

“Our country has implemented educational programs designed to bridge the gap and improve the digital literacy of persons with disabilities, not only by giving them basic skills but also by encouraging them to play an active role in the digital society,” he said.

Said programs facilitate rural Cuba’s access to ICTs, the Internet and mobile services and the operation of specialized community centers where people learn about the use of new technologies.

Miguel Alcaine, representative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Head Office in Central America, thanked Cuba for hosting the 10th edition of Accessible Americas and praised the achievements at regional level in terms of widespread ICT accessibility.
