UNICEF donation helps supply water to homes in Cuban province

MATANZAS, Cuba, Nov 3 (ACN) A pumping equipment donated by the United Nations Children's Fund ( UNICEF) favors the water supply to the citizens and the industrial area of this western city, as part of the recovery after the damage caused by the fire at the supertanker base in 2022.

Yensy Guedes Diaz, general director of the Matanzas Aqueduct and Sewage Company, told the Cuban News Agency that it is a 100-liter-per-second submersible pump, the fifth one in operation today at the Bello C station.

We are in conditions to have a higher level of liquid in the distribution center located in the Naranjal neighborhood, which allows guaranteeing a more stable service throughout the city, especially in areas of the Historic Center where it had to be done with tanker cars, he said.

According to the official, the donation is linked to the investment being made in the 17-kilometer pipeline in the industrial zone, from the pumping station in the Versalles neighborhood to the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE).

Guedes Diaz stated that the water supply to the plant, known as the most efficient of its kind in the country, has been doubled, since during the early morning it is possible to provide up to 120 cubic meters per hour, in contrast to the 60 cubic meters per hour it used to be supplied during the same hours.

Marielys del Toro, UNICEF emergency officer in Cuba, recalled that the contribution of that entity to the recovery of Matanzas after the disaster also included the delivery of medicines to hospitals in the city and hygiene kits to the affected population.
